Sport science can be regarded as an applied science that is anchored in the fundamental sciences (e.g. physics, biology, medicine, sociology, psychology etc.). For this reason, sport science is divided in sub-disciplines (biomechanics, training science, sport medicine, sport sociology, sport psychology etc.). There are interfaces between sport science and each of its related fundamental sciences. In the case of psychology, however, sport psychology is the relevant interface. For students of psychology, who choose sport science as non-psychological elective subject, it is recommended to take courses that are relevant for sport psychology. Furthermore, it is also possible to take courses belonging to other sub-disciplines of sport science. The requirements for sport science as an elective subject are listed below:
One advanced seminar
In an advanced seminar, you will gain theoretical knowledge of a certain topic. (Note: Students of sport science must complete an introductory seminar of the same topic BEFORE they can register for the advanced seminar). Thus, they acquire the prior knowledge that is necessary to complete the advanced seminar successfully. For the subject sport psychology, the knowledge you gained during basic studies of psychology satisfies this prior knowledge requirement.
One project seminar
In a project seminar, you will deepen the theoretical knowledge you acquired in the advanced seminar and practically apply this knowledge. An empirical study will usually be used to help you to explore the seminar topic in more detail.
Oral exam
- You will choose two topics in consultation with the two examiners.
- You must agree on these topics with the respective examiner at least four weeks before the date of the examination.
- You need to send a presentation to the respective examiner via email no later than one week before the date of examination.
- During the examination, each topic will be addressed for about 15 minutes, meaning the total examination time is about 30 minutes.
