Emotion regulation in sport - Invited FG-Symposium

Emotions and their regulation are essential for initiating and sustaining physical activity as well as for optimizing athletic performance at the individual and team level. This symposium unites five experts in these fields to outline current and future research endeavors. First, Englert explores the interplay between implicit (e.g. affects) and explicit processes (e.g. intentions) within the framework of the Physical Activity Adoption and Maintenance Model. This perspective provides new insights into theoretical assumptions and practical recommendations to bridge the intention-behavior gap. Second, Pfeffer et al. investigate affective responses to physical activity with emphasis on cognitive reappraisal (CR). Positive associations found between CR, affective responses, and physical activity behavior suggest that CR may be an efficient self-regulation strategy to facilitate adherence to physical activity. The third contribution shifts focus to competitive sports. O´Mara and Ehrlenspiel address self-presentation concerns (SPC) and the lack of its consistent definition and standardized assessment. Their newly developed comprehensive measure aims to quantify assumptions on the role of SPC in choking experiences in competitive sports. Fourth, Wolf et al. explore team norms as regulators of team emotions in sports competition. Group-level emotion norms predict both collective and individual emotions within integrated sport teams, emphasizing the significance of conceptualizing emotions and norms at the group level. Tamminen and Kim conclude this symposium with a presentation on interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) between teammates in sports, thereby revealing associations with perceived motivational climate, satisfaction, and cohesion. Potential consequences for team success and implications for IER interventions will be discussed.
